O'Grady Leads Lobos at the Plate as UNM Drops Both Saturday Games

PHOENIX, Ariz.— A different senior stepped up on Saturday as senior shortstop Cameryn O’Grady went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, a triple and her first home run to lead The University of New Mexico Lobos with two RBI and nine total bases between the two games.

Andrea Howard drove in two runs on the day, going 2-for-5 at the plate and Izabella Owen tallied a hit.

Six different Lobos drew a walk and the Lobos used all five pitchers between the two games, with freshman Talia Hannappel getting her first start in the circle against OU.

As a team, the Lobos couldn’t keep the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners off the scoreboard and lost 33-4 in five innings, and were unable to break through on the scoreboard in a 10-0, six inning loss to Grand Canyon.

GAME 1: OKLAHOMA

With a change to the starting lineup to put O’Grady leading off, the Lobos started off well with O’Grady sending the second pitch she saw off of Nicole May over the wall in right for her first home run of the season.

The Sooners however answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first, one of three innings that OU scored seven runs.

O’Grady again sparked the Lobo offense in the third, leading off with a triple. Howard followed with a single to center to bring her home, but again the Sooners plated runs in the bottom of the third.

UNM’s final two runs came in the top of the fourth with Reyan Tuck leading off with a walk and Lauren Wilmert reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Two batters later, Peyton Robinson drew a walk to load the bases for O’Grady. The shortstop flied out to center, but Tuck was able to tag from third. Howard singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Wilmert for the final run of the game for UNM.

GAME TWO: GRAND CANYON

Serving as the home team against the Lopes, UNM fell behind early with GCU scoring a run in the bottom of the first and second.

Owen singled to center for the first hit of the game for UNM but was left on second as both teams went scoreless in the fourth.

GCU added to its lead in the fifth with five runs on three hits and added three more in the sixth to bring the run-rule into effect.

Leading off in the sixth, O’Grady doubled to left for her second double of the season and the 45th of her career. O’Grady now is tied for third all-time and is four doubles away from setting the all-time program record.

Emma Guindon again pitched a complete game, the third of the season for the junior.

The Lobos close out the weekend with a final game against No. 11/13 Arizona State, set for 11 a.m. MT on Sunday.
