Howard Among Top 30 for 2021 Softball Senior CLASS Award®
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– Senior outfielder Andrea Howard was selected as one of the top thirty NCAA® softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field for the 2021 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate softball.
According to the release, to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in March, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot, with the Senior CLASS Award winner announced during the 2021 Women’s College World Series® in June. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Howard earns the recognition as a current four-year starter for the Lobos, with Albuquerque native starting in 128 games and playing in 129 during her career to date.
Throughout her time at UNM, Howard has recorded 93 hits, with 20 doubles, three triples and 20 home runs, and 64 RBI and carries a career slugging percentage of .523 and an on-base percentage of .384.
Beyond her stats on the field, Howard is a multi-time UNM, as well as MW, Scholar-Athlete and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team and Second Team All-American as a sophomore. Howard excels in the classroom, carrying over a 4.0 (4.05) grade-point-average through the 2019-20 academic year.
Majoring in biology, Howard intends to attend medical school and become a doctor and currently shadows health professionals. She has shadowed an orthopedic surgeon as well as an emergency department doctor.
Howard has also served as a member of the Lobo Scholars Program and Lobo Leadership 2.0.
