Lobos Head to Colorado to Open Wyoming Series Wednesday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to take on the Wyoming Cowboys on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the home arena for the Air Force Falcons, Clune Arena, in USAFA, Colorado. The game will be on the Mountain West Network and tip off at 6 p.m.

UNM (5-11, 1-11 MW) enters the series after having its last four games either canceled or postponed. The Lobos have not seen the court since Jan. 30 at Fresno State.

Wyoming (10-9, 4-8 MW) is in a similar state after having its’ Utah State series postponed, which was scheduled to take place on Feb. 10-12.

New Mexico is led by senior Makuach Maluach who averages 14.0 points on the season and 13.1 points per game in conference play. Maluach also leads the team in rebounds with 5.8 per game overall and 4.8 in league play.

Wyoming is led by three players averaging scoring in double figures including freshman Marcus Williams (15.9), junior Hunter Maldonado (12.2) and sophomore Kenny Foster (10.4). Maldonado is also the team’s leading rebounder with 6.1 per game on the season. In conference play, four Cowboys are scoring in double digits including Williams (14.8) and Maldonado (10.7) along with sophomore Kwane Marble II (10.7) and freshman Xavier DuSell (10.1).

SERIES HISTORY
The Cowboys are one of UNM’s oldest basketball rivals, dating back to 1950-51. The teams have played 143 games, marking the third-most games against an opponent in UNM history. New Mexico leads the series 75-68 and in HC Paul Weir’s tenure, the Lobos are 7-1 against the Cowboys.

UNM swept last season’s series over Wyoming and has not lost to the Cowboys since March 9, 2019. The Lobos hold a narrow 4-3 advantage over Wyoming in neutral contests.

THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 57-58 in his fourth year at the helm of the Lobos, 85-64 in his fifth season as a head coach. Wyoming head coach Jeff Linder is 10-9 in his first season with the Cowboys and is 90-59 in the fifth season of his career.
