Women's Tennis Adds Japan's Toriumi

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Vicky Maes, head women’s tennis coach, has announced that Satoho Toriumi from Nagoya City, Japan.  Toriumi currently attends Tokyo Senior High School and is slated to graduate this spring.
 
“Satoho is a great addition to the Lobo family,” said Maes.  “She is hard-working, committed, team-orients and dedicated to everything she does.  She is going to be a wonderful representative of our university and I am excited to get on court with her.”
 
Toriumi took part in the All-High School national championships, becoming the first Tokyo Senior High player to qualify for the championships in 26 years.  Playing at No. 1 singles under head coach Hiroshi Kamiguchi, she led Tokyo Senior to its first high school national title. 
 
As a junior player, Toriumi won three Shikoku region tournaments on the way to a U14 No. 1 ranking.  She was named the 2018 Outstanding Player in Tokyo, and her team won the 2019 Outstanding Team Award.
 
An avid disc golf and baseball fan, Toriumi is happy to call herself a Lobo.  “When I first went to America, I met coach Maes,” said Satoho.  “I learned about the great academics and the tennis team.  As a student-athlete, I want to do my best studying and playing tennis.”
