Mountain West Releases Women's Basketball Adjusted Conference Schedule

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Mountain West announced the updated 2020-21 women’s basketball conference slate Tuesday morning. The New format emphasizes the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches and staff while significantly reducing travel.

The league has moved to a 20-game schedule under a modified format that will play out over 11 weeks within the context of state, county and local guidelines.

In the new format, Mountain West teams will face each other in a two-game series in the same week with a one-day break in between contests. Each institution will have five scheduled home and five road series, reducing the regular season travel schedule by four weeks to help mitigate potential virus exposures.

The Lobos are currently set to begin conference play with a pair of road series’ at Nevada on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 and at Utah State on Jan. 7 and Jan. 9, however, the scheduling of UNM’s series with Boise State is still in progress. UNM will likely play the Broncos prior to its series against Nevada, updates will be made regarding that series when they become available.

Following the four-straight away matchups, the Lobos will alternate scheduled home and away series’ with UNLV (home), San José State (away), Fresno State (home), San Diego State (away), Colorado State (home), Wyoming (away) and Air Force (home).

Under the new format, the Lobos will now play each Mountain West squad twice, as opposed to the previous format which featured a pair of teams that UNM would face just once.

This year’s model has been adopted for one year specifically to address the unique challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Conference play will determine the seeding for the 2021 MW Women’s Basketball Championship, which will be held March 7-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
