Lobo Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico volleyball team was honored with the USMC/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 academic year, the association announced Monday.

UNM was one of 227 NCAA Division I teams to be selected and was one of 46 teams to earn the additional distinction of AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll, which comes after a year of setting new academic program records. It is the first time that the Lobos have earned Honor Roll distinction.

The team finished with two of the highest GPAs recorded in program history during the 2019-20 academic year, posting a program-best 3.77 in the fall semester and an equally impressive 3.74 in the spring.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

This is the fifth time in the last six years that the Lobos have received the team academic award and the first under head coach Jon Newman-Gonchar.
