Lobo Women's Tennis FInally At Home on Thursday

Live Stats

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Members of the UNM Lobo women’s tennis team, the coaching staff, trainer … they can all be excused if they mistakenly head to the airport.  It’s what they have done all season, but they need to turn right into the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium parking lot, as the team will finally play its home opener, facing off with the BYU Cougars at 11 a.m. at McKinnon.  There is no charge for the match.

Other than one weekend in which UNM played TCU and SMU, the Lobos have split weekend swings three times.  The last time was just last weekend when UNM beat Montana 4-0 and lost to Northern Arizona 4-2. UNM has been getting hot play in doubles from Bronte Murgett and Natasha Munday, who won both doubles matches last weekend.  The team has really gotten contributions from most anywhere in the lineup, with Sara Kuuttila-Webbert and Bronte Murgett playing well at the top of the lineup, and then seemingly always getting a key win from the likes of Munday, Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Myu Kageyama, who jumped into the singles lineup last week and picked up a big win in the Montana victory.

In BYU, the Lobos have a tough opening opponent.  Of course UNM was supposed to open two weeks ago but Southern Utah canceled the trip, citing injuries although it ironically played and won 7-0 the day before the scheduled game (Southern Utah also canceled against New Mexico State the same weekend).  In BYU, the Lobos will be facing a 6-3 team with a 4-3 win over Northern Arizona and wins over Mountain West foe Utah State (5-2) and UNM’s Saturday opponent, Denver.
