UNM Opens Outdoor Season with Strong Performances

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The outdoor track and field season officially got underway on Friday with two different meets in Northern California.

The Stanford Invitational had the star power competition with some of the top runners in the country, including UNM, and the Lobos proved they were among them.

In one of the last races on the night, Ednah Kurgat ran 32:14.27 in the 10,000-meter race, breaking to school record set last year by Alice Wright by 1.46 seconds, to place seventh overall and the fourth-best time among collegiate runners after running in the elite invite section.

Emily Martin was also among the highlights of the day, winning the second section of the 5000-meter run with 15:59.80, 0.06 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. When all was said and done and the three sections were completed, Martin had the 15th-fastest time overall amongst all runners, including an invite section.

Adva Cohen ran in the 1500-meter run invite section, securing a time of 4:23.01 to finish ninth overall and seventh among collegiate runners. Running in the third section of the 1500-meter, Hannah Nuttall completed the distance in a time of 4:31.88.

On the men’s side, Jonny Glen was the lone representative, competing in the second section of the 3000-meter steeplechase, which he finished in 9:06.60.

Across the way in Hayward and Chabot College at the Mike Franelli Track Classic, Catrina Thomas was the top Lobo finisher in the 5000-meter at 17:22.76, followed by Juanita Johnson (17:43.59), Johanna Briscoe (17:46.28), Chamique DuBoise (18:08.31) and Isabela Nellos (18:35.89). In the men’s 5000-meter, Ian Crowe-Wright ran 14:20.51 in the first section, the fourth-best result for a collegiate runner in the section, and the 16th-best time in the nine sections worth of runners. From the top-16 times, Crowe-Wright was ninth among collegiate runners. 

Alexandra Harris finished second in the second section of the 1500-meter run (4:31.80) and with the seventh-fastest time of all the runners. Natasha Bernal ran 4:51.47 in section 7 of the 1500-meter race.

In the men’s 1500-meter, Iolo Hughes produced the fastest time in the fifth section at 3:53.795 and the 18th-fastest time amongst all runners of 140 finishers.

The Lobos will have  Kristian Hansen, Max Wharton and Michael Wilson as the only entries at Stanford on Saturday, running in the 800-meter set to start at 3:48 p.m. MT. The bulk of the events will be in Southern California at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Team Challenge, competing in 14 events on Saturday.
