ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team opens up conference play this weekend, splitting sites for a pair of Mountain West tilts. The Lobos will host Fresno State at 11 a.m. at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center before heading to Nevada for a 1 p.m. Mountain Time Sunday matchup in Reno.
The Lobos will be playing its sixth straight home match, and UNM is one of the league’s hotter teams, winning four of its last five. The Lobos are coming off a 5-2 win over Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon, a match clinched by Dominic West, who was coming off a Mountain West Player of the Week award. West has won four straight and had the clincher on Sunday. He is tied with Ricky Hernandez Tong and Stepan Holis for the team lead in singles wins with 15 each.
The only team that might be hotter than UNM is Friday’s opponent, Fresno State. The Bulldogs have nearly doubled UNM in total matches, as they are 11-8 overall. They also defeated Air Force 4-3 so the Bulldogs are 1-0 in Mountain West play. Fresno State has won six of its last seven. Sunday’s match against Nevada will be at 1 p.m. in Reno. Nevada is 6-5 overall, and they have lost three straight. Nevada has matches with Sacramento State on Thursday and then Air Force on Saturday.
