Jauregui Honored with “One ABQ” Award by Mayor

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — When Rodolfo Jauregui, formerly of the UNM Men’s Tennis team, saw a man lying in the middle of an intersection with a broken leg, he reacted, potentially saving a man’s life.  He did it because it was the right thing to do.  Today, he was honored by Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller for his compassion and quick thinking.

On Friday, Jauregui, who helped that complete stranger, was honored by Mayor Tim Keller with the “One Albuquerque Award” in a ceremony downtown.  The “One Albuquerque Award” was established to “City workers and community members who go above and beyond their service to the public.”

Jauregui, who was known by his nickname “Fito” when he played at UNM, was honored ‘quick thinking and kindness that helped a stranger in a time of need.’

He helped a stranger at 5:30 in the morning who was laying in the middle of an intersection with a broken leg. He pulled the civilian out of the street, called the police and attended to him until he was safely in the ambulance. Buzz Finley, a member of the local tennis community, heard about the incident and nominated him for the award, which was presented to him at the Mayor’s office.  Rodolfo graduated from the UNM Men’s Tennis team in December 2017.

“This is a genuine act of kindness from a UNM men’s tennis alum and it is special that he has been recognized for this among our community,” said assistant coach Robin Goodman, who went with Jauregui to be honored.
