Men's Golf Finishes Fourth at Saint Mary's Invite

MONTEREY, CALIF.— The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished fourth out of 16 squads at the Saint Mary’s Intercollegiate hosted by Saint Mary’s on Wednesday. The Lobos were one of just four teams to finish the competition below par and their three-round total of 841 (-11) was 11 strokes ahead of fifth place.

UNM shot scores of 279 (-5), 278 (-6) and 284 (E) in each round, respectively, to solidify its fourth-place spot. The Lobos finished second overall in pars (172) and third in both par-3 and par-5 scoring with averages of 3.07 (+5) and 4.62 (-23), respectively. The squad also carded three eagles to tie for third overall while its 49 birdies tied for fifth.

Sophomore Sam Choi led the Lobos in the competition as he tied for 12th with a three-round total of three under, 210. He remained consistent throughout the tournament, shooting scores of 69 (-2), 71 (E) and 70 (-1) in each round, respectively. Choi led the team in par-4 scoring, averaging 3.96 (-1) to tie for third in the category and he raked in 11 birdies across his three rounds.

Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya shot an even 71 in round three to land in a tie for 22nd at one under, 212. The sophomore shot a first-round score of 72 (+1) and his second-round score of 69 (-2) marked a new season best low-round. Arcaya led the team in birdies as his 13 total was just two shy of the tournament leader (15).

Freshman Albert Boneta, redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair and junior Galven Green each finished the competition tied for 29th at one over, 214. Boneta registered two eagles throughout the competition with his first being a hole-in-one in the first round (hole #6) and his second being on his final hole in round three (hole #9). Green also registered an eagle at the tournament, happening for him on hole #18 of round two.

Green registered a new season-best low round score at the competition as he logged a 66 (-5) in the second round of action.

Boneta, Sinclair and Green each averaged 3.93 (-1) on par-3s to tie for third in the category. Green led the Lobos in pars as his outstanding 39 was just two behind the tournament leader (41).

New Mexico’s individual Sam Dickey recorded two eagles in round three as he shot a one under, 70 to match his first-round score. Dickey wrapped up with a combined score of 216 (+3) to tie for 40th overall.

The Lobos finished just five strokes behind third-place Arizona (836, -16) and nine strokes behind second-place BYU (832, -20). Mountain West opponent Colorado State took home the team title as it shot 25 under, 827. BYU’s Peter Kuest earned a  first-place finish for the second year in a row at the tournament as he shot a three-round total of 11 under, 202.

UNM’s fourth-place finish marks its third top-five finish of the season. The Lobos will pick up where they left off in the spring as they head to the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona on Jan. 27-28, 2020.
