Lobos’ four-game winning streak snapped in 1-0 loss at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho — In a battle for the first place standing in the Mountain West, The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team fell 1-0 in a hard-fought match to the Boise State Broncos. The game-clinching goal in the match was scored in the 75th minute by Boise State’s Jazel Bowers.

With all that was at stake in the mid-October clash, competition between the two teams that entered tied atop the MW standings was neck and neck and that showed through on the stat line as both the Lobos (8-5-0, 4-2-0) and the Broncos (13-2-0, 5-1-0) were almost identical across the board. The Broncos took just two more shots than the Lobos (10) ending the game with 12 shots. Both teams took eight shots in the first half alone, three of those being on goal for the Lobos.

Although the Lobo defense did not allow many opportunities for BSU to score, Jazel Bowers was able to distance herself just enough in the 75th minute to compose a shot at the top left of the box. Bowers’ shot was just outside of redshirt-sophomore goalie, Malia Vanisi’s reach, finding the back of the net and putting the Broncos on the board.

A better chance to score for the Broncos came early in the first half, but a backline save from sophomore Jaelyn Hendren in the ninth minute of the match kept the Broncos off the board. That save by Hendren came off a Boise State corner kick that came to Raven Sweeney in the box, who then headed the ball to the right of Vanisi. Hendren, however, was there to stop the ball from entering the goal and kicked it out of the box for the next play to begin.

The Lobos had good looks during the match which just fell short of putting the team on the board. Junior Madi Hirschman created a play for herself as she dribbled the ball downfield, staying one stride ahead of her Boise defender. Once Hirshman made it to the top of the box, she hammered the ball towards the goal, a shot that was just left of the post.

The Lobos applied pressure to Boise’s half of the pitch throughout the match but fell short in finding the back of the net.

The Lobos will stay on the road as they take on Colorado College on October 18 at 7 p.m. and play in one more away match versus Air Force on October 20. The Lobos will then return home and finish out regular season with three home conference matches.
