Lobos offense secures 3-0 shutout over Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. — With their fourth shutout of the season, The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team dominated Wyoming in a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in Laramie, Wyo. Redshirt-junior Gwen Maly, senior Jessie Hix and sophomore Jadyn Edwards were the three goal-scorers for the Lobos.

Wyoming’s (4-3-2, 1-1-0) defense was put to the test early as New Mexico’s (5-4-0, 1-1-0) offense took command of the game since the opening minutes. It was in the 12th minute when the Lobos’ determination came to light as the team was granted a free-kick opportunity due to a foul on the Cowgirls. Maly was the Lobo to take the shot, and with a strong kick from her left foot, managed to get the ball through a wall of Cowgirls and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Another scoring opportunity presented itself in the 42nd minute of the match when Edwards secured the ball for a throw in near the Cowgirls’ box. The throw in was headed by Wyoming’s Savannah Warner away from the net, but then rebounded by redshirt-sophomore Aspen Headrick. The ball then made its way back into the box, finding Hix who, after a quick scramble, hammered the ball into the net.

The solidifying goal for the Lobos win came from Edwards with less than 20 minutes to go in the match. Edwards, with a lone-defender on her side, gained possession of the ball off a pass inside the box. Edwards’ first shot hit the left post of the Cowgirl net, and bounced back to Edwards. She then was able to net the ball as she kicked the it past the left side of the goalie.

Although the third goal of the match did not come until the 78th minute, it’s of note that the Lobo offense did not waiver in that time. New Mexico took eight shots in the second half alone, four of which were on goal, compared to Wyoming’s two. Similarly, in the entirety of the match, the Lobos out-shot Wyoming 16 shots to five, with eight of those shots being on goal.

The Lobos maintained the 3-0 advantage through the remainder of the match, securing the shutout versus Wyoming.

For all three goal-scorers in the match, their respective goal served as each player’s second goal on the season.

The Lobos now return home to host Nevada on October 4 for their Pack the Pitch night. They will remain in Albuquerque for a match versus UNLV on October 6.
