Lobos apply pressure but drop road game at Oregon State 1-0

CORVALLIS, Ore. – After waiting through an hour-long lightning delay that pushed back the start of Thursday night’s game to 9 p.m. (MT), the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team continued their grueling non-conference road schedule at Oregon State. Ultimately an early second half goal by Oregon State held up as the final score registered at 1-0 in favor of OSU.

While the Lobos (1-3-0) and their potentially potent offense were shutout for the second time this season, chances were not few and far between on Thursday night. For the game, the Lobos got off 13 shots and out-shot the Beavers (4-0-0) 13-9. Of those 13 shots five were on target, but Beaver goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba made saves on each test as she registered her third clean sheet of the season.

The lone goal in the game came in the 53rd-minute of the contest as Ashleigh Fonsen took a shot from beyond the 18-yard box that eluded Lobo defenders and goalkeeper Malia Vanisi on its way to the back of the net.

Now off to an unbeaten start at 4-0-0, the Beavers entered play against the Lobos having scored multiple goals in the first three games and totaling eight goals on the season. The Lobo defense, which has been strong in the early part of the season against some stout competition were so once more as the one goal scored by Oregon State is the fewest in a game for the Beavers this season.

In leading statistically in shots, the Lobos had eight different players record a shot in the game. Four players had multiple shots and were led by Gwen Maly’s three. Alesia Garcia, Mackenna Havenor and Alexa Kirton all had two shots respectively.

The Lobos will now prepare for one more road game in the Pacific Northwest as they will travel about an hour and a half north to Portland where they will take on Portland State on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for Noon (MT).
