Early goal for Portland stands up; Lobos fall 1-0

SEATTLE, Wash. – The first of a four-game road trip for the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team was played on Thursday night out at the Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle, Wash., and a first half goal by the University of Portland held up as the Lobos dropped their first game of the season to the Pilots, 1-0.

The Lobos (1-1-0) and Pilots (1-0-1) were playing one another as the opening game of the Husky Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington. Both teams will play a second game in the invitational on Sunday with the Lobos taking on Washington and the Pilots squaring off with nationally-ranked North Carolina.

In the game against Portland, the Lobos led statistically in shots (8-2) and corners (5-2), but the chances generated unfortunately did not result in a goal. Offensively, the Pilots did not have many chances, but they capitalized on their initial opportunity and made it stand up.

In the 27th minute, the Pilots scored the lone goal in the game as Taryn Ries, who ranked in the top-10 of the country in goals scored a year ago, received a ball in from the left wing and found the back of the net.

The Lobos will now prepare for their aforementioned Sunday match with Washington. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m. (MT).
