STUDENT-ATHLETES POST 3.29 GPA FOR FALL SEMESTER
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico student-athletes turned in a cumulative 3.29 GPA for the Fall, 2018 semester, the fifth-best department GPA since the Fall of 1988 when official records have been documented. The semester GPA was burgeoned by nine programs turning in top-five program GPAs, as well as the male student-athletes, who tied their record for highest GPA.
Overall, the 3.29 GPA means the department has now had 14 straight semesters of at least a 3.1 GPA and 21 straight with at least a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, the department GPA jumped up 0.10 points from last Spring’s 3.19 GPA, and that jump is the largest since a 0.13 jump from Spring to Fall in 2008.
The nine programs the recorded a top-five GPA in program history marks exactly half of the programs in the department. For GPA purposes men’s indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and cross country are combined, as is the same for the women’s side.
The programs setting top five marks this semester were football, men’s skiing, men’s tennis, men’s track & field/cross country, beach volleyball, women’s golf, women’s skiing, women’s soccer and swimming and diving. Four programs set overall program records for best GPA; men’s skiing (3.78), men’s tennis (3.74), men’s track & field/cross country (3.52) and swimming and diving (3.76). Just as significant, the Lobo football team produced it’s third-highest GPA overall with a 2.83, but it marked the highest in-season GPA in the program’s history. Combined with the Spring’s 2.85, the team turned in it’s best calendar year as well. Four of the five highest in-season GPAs for the football team have now come under Coach Bob Davie.
Additionally, the men’s basketball team picked up the biggest improvement, jumping the teams’ GPA more than half a letter grade, up 0.56 points to a 2.80, the 11th time in the last 13 semesters that the team has had at least a 2.75 GPA.
Overall, UNM’s female student-athletes had a 3.50 GPA, the 23rd straight semester with at least a 3.3 GPA. For the men, they recorded a 3.13 GPA, tying the department record and it was the 14th straight semester with a 2.9 or better GPA.
“As hard as our student-athletes work at their craft on the practice and game fields, I am so proud of their efforts and tenacity in the classroom,” said Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez. “Our university has tremendous pride in the academic successes of our student-athletes. We have very a talented staff of academic advisors under Chris Baca that work with our student-athletes, and of course we have a terrific faculty at The University of New Mexico. There is a level of commitment to being a student-athlete, and that extends to the classroom. Our Lobo student-athletes continue to be a great source of pride for all Lobos.”
