Lobos take first game of Rio Grande Rivalry against the Aggies, 83-58

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The first of two games on the hardwood between the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University women’s basketball teams took place on Saturday afternoon at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit, and it was the Lobos that tallied the victory as they eased past the Aggies by a score of 83-58.

Saturday’s game between the two in-state rivals was not in doubt for long as the Aggies’ (4-2) final lead occurred at the 7:28 mark of the first quarter. That was also their largest lead of the game, a mere three points, 7-4. After that, the Lobos (5-1) ripped off a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to take a six-point lead, 13-7.

That 9-0 run saw a trio of trifectas knocked down with the first being triggered by Ahlise Hurst, who buried nine threes in her last game on Wednesday against Oklahoma. The other two makes from long range came from senior center Jaisa Nunn as she drained wide open looks from straightaway center. The two made three-pointers for Nunn matched a career-best as she did so in her sophomore season against Utah State.

From there, the Lobos began to separate themselves from the Aggies and built a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much of the same for the Lobos as they swelled their lead to a large as 22 points, 41-19, before going into the locker room with a 20-point lead, 45-25.

The closest the Aggies would get in the second half was 15 points with 5:43 to go in the game, but a 6-0 burst by the Lobos after that gave UNM another 20-point lead. In the remainder of the game, the Lobos got solid contributions from their bench as they were able to see their lead reach a pinnacle of 27 points before ending with a 25-point victory. It was the largest margin of victory against the Aggies since 2016 when UNM won 84-58 at home.

The Lobos will now prepare for another game at home as they play host to regional rival UTEP on Wednesday, December 5. Tip-off from Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit is scheduled for 7 p.m. To buy single-game tickets visit www.unmtickets.com/wbb
