Lobo Student-Athletes Make the Grade Again

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico student-athletes continue to take care of business in the classroom as they registered a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, tying for the fourth-best semester since UNM began keeping meticulous records in the Fall of 1986.  Once again, the GPA for UNM’s student-athletes was higher than the general population.

The 3.25 marked the 11th straight semester that UNM’s student-athletes have achieved at least a 3.2 grade point average, and it ran their streak of consecutive semesters with at least a 3.0 grade point average to 19.  Nine of the 18 programs recorded GPAs in its top-five in program history, including men’s golf, men’s tennis, beach volleyball, women’s skiing, women’s soccer and women’s track & field/cross country, who all had its second-highest GPAs ever.

The women’s programs were led by women’s skiing, which recorded a 3.95 GPA, not only tying for the second-highest GPA in program history, but it was the second highest in the department’s history, behind the 4.01 the team had last semester.  On the men’s side, the golf team led the way with a 3.65 GPA, just ahead of the tennis team, which had a 3.62 GPA.

Overall, UNM’s female student-athletes had a 3.57 GPA, the ninth straight semester with at least a 3.5 GPA, and it tied for the second-highest overall GPA.  For the men, they recorded a 3.02 GPA, the 12th straight semester with a 3.02 GPA.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts of our student-athletes in the classroom,” said Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez.  “The academic successes of our student-athletes are a tremendous source of pride for our institution, our academic staff, and the extremely talented faculty at The University of New Mexico.  Most of all, it’s a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes, who put as much of an effort into their classwork as they do on the playing fields.”
