ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to open its 2017-18 slate on Saturday, November 11 when it takes on Northern New Mexico at 7 p.m. at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.

Saturday’s game will be Heroes Night in Dreamstyle Arena where the Lobos will honor military members and first responders. The team will be wearing special camouflage shooting shirts and all active and retired military and first responders with ID can purchase a $10 discounted ticket in sections H-P, rows 1-10.

Saturday’s game will also mark the first regular-season contest for first-year head coach Paul Weir who comes to UNM from New Mexico State. In his first season as a head coach at NMSU, Weir amassed a 28-6 overall record and led the Aggies to the WAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Weir’s Lobos put on a show in their charity exhibition matchup against former rival BYU on Oct. 27. UNM put up 73 points in the contest, falling by just six points after tying it with just a minute left in regulation. Senior Sam Logwood led UNM with 23 points and six rebounds, going 8-for-15 from the floor.

The charity exhibition raised over $21,000 for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

The Lobos enter the official beginning of the 2017-18 season returning just five players from the 2016-17 squad that closed its season in the Mountain West Quarterfinals in March. New Mexico welcomes nine new faces to the team this year including three freshmen and six transfers. Four of those transfers are eligible to play on Saturday and throughout the season including Antino Jackson (Akron), Chris McNeal (Indian Hills CC), Jachai Simmons (Midland College) and Troy Simons (Polk State).

SERIES HISTORY
While the Lobos and the Eagles have never met in regular-season action, Coach Weir faced the team just last season. Weir led NMSU to a 98-75 victory at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
