Fishbein Earns 300th Win With 3-0 Shutout at LMU

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — Head coach Jeremy Fishbein of The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program clinched his 300th career victory on Wednesday night with a 3-0 shutout win over Loyola Marymount on the road.

Fishbein is in his 16th season at UNM, his 25th overall, and entered the 2017 season ranked 17th in the nation among NCAA Division I active head coaches in victories.

The Lobos improve to 6-3-1 on the season and are 6-1-1 in their last eight matches. LMU falls to 2-7-2 on the season with the loss.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “We scored three really nice goals. It was an interesting game, we were all over them for the first 30 minutes, then the game evened out. The three goals were good, and it was great to get the shutout.”

When asked about his 300th victory, Fishbein added, “This is a great group to share it with. I am proud of this group of guys and I’m grateful to have had such a wonderful group of players to have worked with throughout my career.”

Once again, the squads went into the locker room at the half tied 0-0, but the Lobos exploded in the second half, putting away three within 20 minutes for the comfortable victory. Since Sept. 8, UNM has scored 10 of their 11 goals in the second half, including four gamewinners. Prior to Sept. 8, UNM scored just three of its nine goals in the second half.

Junior Aaron Herrera got the Lobo offense picking up its momentum in the second half. He had fired high above the crossbar in the first half but took another shot in the second, on goal, to come close to giving UNM the advantage.

His efforts were rewarded when, at the 66:46 mark, he scored the eventual gamewinner off of a free kick from the top of the box. Herrera sailed the ball high over the LMU wall into the top corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Redshirt-sophomore Devin Boyce added to the Lobo tally in the 70th minute, netting an insurance goal for UNM from 25 yards to put the Lobos up 2-0. With less than four minutes left in the match, sophomore Aaron Scott scored his first goal as a Lobo to make it 3-0 UNM and clinch the win. Scott’s goal was assisted by Herrera.

Overall, UNM outshot the Lions 17-11 including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. Senior keeper Jason Beaulieu posted seven saves on the night while LMU’s Partee saved six. With the shutout, Beaulieu (6-3-1) registers his 19th career shutout and remains in third in the UNM recordbook for career shutouts. Partee is 1-7-2 on the season.

The Lobos will have another short turnaround before their next match as they will host Conference USA foe Florida Atlantic on Saturday at the UNM Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. The match kicks off a trio of home matches through Oct. 18.
