LoboTHON to Host Cherry-Silver Men’s Basketball Scrimmage in Johnson Gym

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In an attempt to combine two entities that embody the image of the University of New Mexico through charity, competition and dedication, LoboTHON and the Lobo Men’s Basketball team are partnering up for the Cherry – Silver Scrimmage which will take place on October 5th at 4:00pm in Johnson Gym.

The purpose of this inaugural event is to bring Coach Weir’s new look Lobo Basketball team to Main Campus to unite the University of New Mexico students, faculty and staff for an impactful cause with local ties.

“Roy Johnson is one of those special people in Lobo history we want to recognize, as is the gymnasium that still stands in his name,” said head coach Paul Weir. “The location on campus will hopefully serve as a great launching point for our campus members and basketball team to truly connect. It also brings our fans from around our community into the heart of a historic part of our beautiful college campus.”

The event will be sponsored by LoboTHON, a non-profit student group who’s goal is to raise both money and awarness for the UNM Children’s Hospital. LoboTHON unifies students in the pursuit of giving every child a chance to be a Lobo.

“LoboTHON is thrilled to announce its partnership with Lobo Athletics to reaffirm our commitment to fighting for the next generation of Lobos as they fight for their lives,” said LoboTHON Director Aaron Ochoa. “Everyone’s a Lobo, and Everyone’s For the Kids.”

This event is free and will feature a Lobo Men’s Basketball scrimmage, contests for UNM students and prizes!  Opportunities to donate to LoboTHON will be available as well.

“Bringing our student athletes together with student activities to fundraise for the UNM Children’s Hospital reflects the best of what we do here at UNM, from the South to the North Campus,” remarked UNM President Chaouki Abdallah. “I’m looking forward to seeing our basketball players and LoboTHON participants capitalize on their physical energies to support the health and wellness of the next generation”
