Lobos Fall In Three Straight To UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of New Mexico volleyball team dropped three straight sets to UNLV by scores of 23-25, 23-25 and 20-25 on Saturday evening at the Rebels’ Cox Pavilion.

The Lobos started off slow as UNLV took a quick 4-2 lead in the first set. Chantale Riddle and Simone Henderson tied it back up at 4 and the two teams traded points until the Lobos took 14-11 lead after a kill from Hannah Johnson. The Rebels used their offense to get back into the set and again the two teams went point-for-point, tying the match up five more times before UNLV claimed the first set victory.

The second set, the Lobos started with a 5-1 lead after kills from Riddle, Julia Warren and attack errors from the Rebels. UNLV once again worked its way back up to the Lobos speed but the Lobos still led 6-4. Mistakes by the Rebels put the Lobos up 10-5 but UNLV used offense and took advantage of Lobo mistakes to tie the match at 13-13. The two teams traded points and UNLV used a three-point run to finish the set.

The third and final set proved to be much the same as the Lobos started out strong with a 6-4 lead but let the Rebels back into the set, tying the match at 8-8. Again it was a tight set as the two teams traded points and UNLV took control of the set leading 15-11 over the Lobos. The Lobos got kills from Riddle, Devanne Sours and Warren but it wasn’t enough to claim the set victory.

For the match, the Lobos hit .133. Riddle led the Lobos with 11 kills and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Warren tallied six kills and nine digs while Maddie Mayfield led the back row with 14 digs. Johnson picked up 19 assists. UNLV hit .185 for the match and tallied 49 kills.
