Postgame Quotes
New Mexico Head Coach Steve Alford
BYU vs. UNM
1/29/2010
“You only had 3 turnovers in the second half. What was the importance of that.”
“That was one of the things we talked about at halftime, reducing our turnovers, and I like the way we came out. We were a little excited in the first half, which is understandable, because we have a lot of young players. We went down by thirteen to a team with a number 1 RPI in the country, so to come back from that and win by nine is a special turnaround.”
“Talk about the growth of Tony Snell.”
“We’ve seen this coming all along. His whole thing is having the confidence that he can do it. We’ve seen him do well in practice, and that’s why his minutes have gone up. We’re going with the 4-guard line-up that we’ve had success with in the past. We’re a little bit more potent on offense and we’re getting better on defense, and part of that was waiting for the maturation of Tony.”
“How was having Tony guarding Jimmer Fredette helpful for Dairese and everyone on the team?”
“We wanted to put some length on him, and Tony has that. I thought we made him take some really difficult shots, and make sure he was engaged defensively. He made some shots that great players make. We lost him a couple of times but Tony did well. Our freshmen were terrific, but in the end it all comes back to Dairese (Gary).”
BYU’s Jimmer Fredette
“Our game plan was to go out and make it as tough as we can on them. I made some tough shots and I made some plays but in the end they just made more plays than we did. They made more shots and we didn’t do that so that’s how they got the win. Steve Alford is a very defensive-minded coach.”
BYU Head Coach Dave Rose
“Defensively, we had a hard time. We had a hard time getting them stopped in the last ten minutes of the game. I thought the first thirty minutes of the game we were in a pretty good spot. When they spread the floor small and put all those shooters around and they started hitting them and then got the lead, it’s hard to keep everything under control.”
On the UNM team
“They have great talent, great experience, good guards. They have everything they need to be a great team and they are.”
New Mexico Players
Senior Dairese Gary
“Coach Alford gave me the confidence and I made the right plays. Luckily, Tony (Snell) made the right shots for me.”
Freshman Tony Snell
On his overall performance:
“I just played big, did what the coaches told me.”
On guarding Fredette:
“Coach gave me the assignment and I just tried my best. It was a hard assignment for me but I tried.”
On Dairese Gary’s play:
“He’s the key to our team. We need him. He stepped up big.”
