UNM Head Coach Ritchie McKay

Opening statement:

“Obviously, we shot the ball very well tonight and I’m sure we’ll receive a lot of attention. I think it’s the school record for the most 3’s in a game. This game was won on the other end of the floor. We just did a great job defensively against a well-coached team. They’ve got a chance to be really, really good in their league. Our guys have really bought into our defensive system and how hard you have to play and the places you need to be, so I was excited about that effort. I’m proud of a lot of individual efforts but it was a great team effort.”

McKay on Alfred Neale’s 3 pointer off the back board:

“Al had a great night tonight. The 3-point shot is something he takes in practice and makes frequently. We want our guys to shoot more threes…we only shot ten last night total. It’s not very characteristic of us and I want to attack because we have more athletes but we also have to take what the defense gives us.”

McKay on the pre-half time run:

” It was fun. Mark Walters and Danny hit a three. I think I got a strained Achilles from trying to run up and down to chase Mark. I love when our guys play with that kind of emotion. There was 12,000 here tonight but if there was 18 thousand I’m sure it would have been like the old days.”

McKay on the team’s play tonight:

“Yeah, I think this is a fun team to watch. I don’t know if we’re as good as we played tonight because I don’t know if we’re always going to 20-35 behind the arc but this team has the chance to be something special and we’re confident that we could be really good.
