Four Lobo Track Alums Heading to World Indoors
PORTLAND, Ore. — Four University of New Mexico track & field alumni are competing at the IAAF World Indoor Championships this weekend at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Ore.
Former Lobo standouts Lee Emanuel and Josephine Moultrie are both representing Great Britain in the 3,000-meter run, while Tamara Armoush will run the 1500 for Jordan and Jarrin Solomon will run the as part of Trinidad and Tobago’s 4×400 meter relay.
Emanuel, a two-time NCAA Champion in the mile run for New Mexico, takes aim in the 3000 after winning his second straight British senior title in the event on February 27.
The Hastings, England, product has experienced tremendous success over the past few years, with a runner-up finish at the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships and a fifth-place finish in the 1500 at the last installment of the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2014.
Emanuel enters the meet with a season best of 7 minutes, 55.61 seconds, and ran 7:44.48 at the European Indoor Championships last year.
Moultrie, an All-American for the Lobos in cross country in 2012, posted a second-place finish in the 3000 at the British Championships, and registered a personal record of 8:57.14 in the 3000 at the Scottish 3000m Championships.
The Glasgow, Scotland, native also took second in the 1500 at the Scottish National Championships in late January.
Armoush, a 2015 graduate of UNM, heads to Portland in the 1500 riding a strong season of cross country so far in 2016. She most recently finished 18th at both the British Athletics Cross Challenge and the ECCA Saucony English National Championships.
On the track, Armoush has strong experience in the metric mile, including two NCAA Regional appearances in the event for the Lobos. She ran 4:24.39 at the Sainsbury’s British Championships last July and finished 13th at the England Athletics U23 Championships in 2014.
She owns a personal best of 4:20.81 set last year at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
Solomon is one of the most decorated alumni ever to graduate from New Mexico, having earned a bronze medal with Trinidad & Tobago at the 2012 London Olympics.
An All-American in the 400 for UNM, Solomon earned silver at the 2015 World Championships and bronze at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2014 World Relays.
The Albuquerque native owns a personal-record of 44.98 set in 2014.
Emanuel and Armoush lead off the Lobos at the World Championships on Friday, while Solomon runs on Saturday and Moultrie on Sunday. Complete results can be accessed at IAAF.com.
