Jon Newman-Gonchar became the 10th head volleyball coach at the University of New Mexico on Jan. 21, 2019.

Newman-Gonchar took over at the helm of the Lobos after serving as the associate head coach at the University of Arkansas for the previous three seasons. In his last season in Fayetteville, a pair of Razorbacks earned AVCA All-South Region honors, giving Arkansas at least one All-Region honor in each of his three seasons with the program. The year prior, the Razorbacks went 19-11.

The Lobos have sustained success under Newman-Gonchar and have made the MW Tournament each of the past three years that it has been held. The Lobos have achieved a winning record in each of the last 3 years (56-34, 62.2%) with 20 wins in 2021 the most for the program since 2013, with UNM advancing to the conference semis in 2023 for the first time in the current format with their first MW Tournament win since 2006.

In the 2022 season, the Lobos led the MW in digs, digs per set and in opp. hitting %, and in conference matches, led the MW in digs (1146) and digs per set (16.14), 2nd in the MW in opponent hitting % (.188) and blocks (175) and blocks per set (2.46). UNM finished 54th in the NCAA in total digs (1830) and 64th in digs per set (15.64).

UNM swept CSU at Fort Collins for the 2nd time in program history and for the first time in program history, won in Laramie and Fort Collins in the same year, which included Coach Newman-Gonchar reaching the 50-win milestone in a sweep at Colorado State on Nov. 10, 2022.

Several players breaking into the top-5 in program history. Avital Jaloba finished with 147 total blocks on the season, setting the program record for most blocks in the 25-point rally scoring era and second all-time. Her 126 assisted blocks are also the most in program history in the 25-point rally scoring era and the ninth most all-time. Kaitlynn Biassou’s 431 kills on the season ranked fifth in program history in the 25-point rally scoring era and her 504.5 points placed her fourth in program history in the 25-point rally scoring era and 10th all-time. In addition, her 33 service aces placed her second in the 25-point rally scoring era record book. Uxue Guereca’s 30 aces placed her fifth. Alena Moldan’s 502 digs ranked fourth in the 25-point rally scoring era and fourth all-time in program history and Anilee Sher’s 718 assists this season places her ninth in the 25-point rally scoring era.

UNM had its best season under Newman-Gonchar in 2021, starting off the season projected to finish 10th in the Mountain West preseason poll as voted on by the coaches and without a player on the preseason list.

However, the Lobos quickly proved that this season and this team would be different and that they’d prove the naysayers wrong, sweeping their first seven opponents and going 23-straight sets before dropping a set in an 8-0 season start. Heading into the UNM home tournament in the third week of the season, the Lobos were one of four teams in the country that hadn’t dropped a set, and when all was said and done, were one of the final two teams standing that hadn’t dropped a set to start the season.

The Lobos entered conference play 9-2, having won three weekly conference awards, nearly matching the program record of MW weekly awards of four, with Kaitlynn Biassou (offensive), Alena Moldan (defensive) and Elizabeth Woods (freshman) all earning their first conference weekly honors.

Further, the Lobos’ 5-0 start was a feat that last occurred in 2009, the last time UNM started 8-2 was in 2009, and as the season unfolded, New Mexico recorded their best start through the first 15 matches (12-3) since 2007, and best start through 20 matches since 2007. The last team to start 8-0 was in 2008.

UNM was ranked among the best in the country in opponent hitting percentage, holding the No. 1 rating for three weeks and was in the top-10 six weeks.

Going on the road to face San Diego State, a team historically that UNM has not fared well against, the Lobos changed the narrative, achieving something that hadn’t been done since 2009 and in the process achieved another feat that hadn’t been done since 2014.

With their four-set win over San Diego State, the Lobos defeated the Aztecs for the first time in San Diego since Oct. 31, 2009, also in four sets, and started conference play 3-0 for the first time since 2014. In addition, it marked the first win against SDSU since Nov. 19, 2016, a span of eight matches. The following season, they did even better, sweeping the season series with the Aztecs with a pair of four-set wins at home and on the road.

UNM finished the regular season 20-9, 11-7 in conference, the first time with 20 wins since 2013 and the 11 conference wins the most since 2014. It also signified the first winning record for the program since 2015, and with 12 sweeps and 10 home wins, the most sweeps in a season since 2017 and the most home wins for the program since 2015.

In addition, UNM finished the regular season with a conference-best eight weekly conference awards, with Moldan earning three defensive nods, Biassou two offensive nods, Woods two freshman nods and Uxue Guereca closing the season with her first career offensive award.

In his first year at UNM, the Lobos got stronger as the season went on, finishing the season winning five of the last seven matches. In the classroom, the Lobos posted two of the highest GPAs recorded in program history during the 2019-20 academic year, posting a program-best 3.77 in the fall semester and an equally impressive 3.74 in the spring. As a result, the team was named to the USMC/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Team Academic Honor Roll, one of 46 teams to earn the additional distinction.

The Lobo head coach has served under renowned volleyball coaches such as Arkansas’s Jason Watson, Iowa State’s Christy Johnson-Lynch and former Loyola Marymount coach, USA Women’s National Team assistant and current Georgia head coach Tom Black.

“I’m excited to welcome Jon and have him be our head volleyball coach,” said Eddie Nuñez, Director of Athletics.  “We wanted someone with a wide breadth of experience and someone that will bring excitement and championships to Lobo Volleyball.  Jon has been at all levels of Division I and he has tremendous national team experience.  We look forward to having Jon and his wife Morgan join the Lobo family.”

“I am thrilled to be named Head Coach at The University of New Mexico. I am humbled to lead the Lobo Volleyball team, represent this great state and this excellent institution,” said Newman-Gonchar.  “I am grateful to call Albuquerque home and I would like to thank Director of Athletics, Eddie Nuñez, SWA Janice Ruggiero, and Associate A.D. Ed Manzanares for the transparent and professional search process.”

Newman Gonchar added, “I would also like to thank one of my greatest mentors and friends, Jason Watson and the University of Arkansas for a wonderful three years. UNM has everything I was looking for, a flagship university that offers a great student athlete experience, in a town that loves athletics, and to be working with an athletic department that views the student athlete experience with great pride.”

Prior to Arkansas, Newman-Gonchar was an assistant coach at Iowa State in Ames.  With the Cyclones, the program went 56-31 overall, including 32-16 in Big 12 play.  Iowa State defeated five ranked teams over those three seasons, finished as high as second in the Big 12, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament twice.

Individually, Newman-Gonchar coached his student-athletes to four AVCA All-America certificates, six AVCA All-Region honors and 18 All-Big 12 selections including a trio of Big 12 Libero of the Year honors and the 2015 Big 12 Freshman of the Year. In his three seasons at Iowa State, he worked directly with the team’s setters and middle blockers.

Newman-Gonchar has also had assistant coaching stops at Loyola Marymount (2010-12) and UC San Diego with both the men’s and women’s teams (2007-09) and Louisiana-Lafayette (2006).  He also has been an assistant coach with the Thompson Rivers University men’s volleyball team in British Columbia, and he was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater Northern Arizona.

The Lobo head coach has a history of success working with Team USA Volleyball, winning a total of five gold medals through his time with the national teams, serving in various roles. Most recently, Newman-Gonchar was an assistant coach for the Under 21 team that won gold at the 2022 Women’s U21 NORCECA Pan American Cup and served as an assistant coach with the Women’s Indoor U20 National Training Team that competed in the 2021 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship. In 2018, Newman-Gonchar was selected by Karch Kiraly to serve as head coach of the 2018 Team USA NORCECA Pan American Cup team, where the squad took gold in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In 2017, Newman-Gonchar joined Team USA as a consultant coach for the FIVB World Grand Prix team that finished 5th in the world in Nanjng, China. Also, in the summer of 2017, the Pan American Cup team took Gold in Lima, Peru at the annual NORCECA event.  Previously he served as assistant coach with the Pan American Cup team in 2015 in Lima, Peru and 2016 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where the U.S. won gold and bronze respectively.

In February 2020, Newman-Gonchar served as a court evaluator at the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryout held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

He began his USA High Performance team experience in 2007, working with the USA Select A1 Girls Program.  Moved up the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline ranks from there, including working as a technical assistant with the U.S. Junior National Team in 2009 as they prepared for the NORCECA U20 Continental Championship and again in preparation for the team competing at the 2010 FIVB U20 World Championships.

“The future is very bright for Lobo athletics and I can’t wait to get to work to make UNM The Volleyball University in the state of New Mexico,” Newman-Gonchar said when his hire was announced.

A native of Claremont, Calif., Newman-Gonchar earned his bachelor’s degree in health sciences in December 2005 from Northern Arizona. He and his wife Morgan have two children, Hudson and Grayson.
