Head Coach

Stephanie Wooten-Quijada enters her second season as the head coach of the University of New Mexico Women’s Tennis program.  She was named as the sixth head coach of the program on August 3, 2016.

Wooten-Quijada comes to New Mexico after one year as the head coach at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in Edinburg, Texas, where she led the Vaqueros to the university’s first-ever Western Athletic Conference title.

In 2016-17, Wooten-Quijada oversaw a season that saw a Lobo team catch fire near the end of the season, reeling off a 7-3 mark to end the season, including a 4-3 loss in the Mountain West Tournament to eventual champion San Jose State.  Wooten-Quijada oversaw a sweep of regional rivals UTEP and New Mexico State, and then led the Lobos to run roughshod over the Mountain West, going 4-1 in conference play.

Among her top 2017 coaching jobs was the pickup of Diana Wong, who went on a two-month unbeaten streak under Wooten-Quijada, and was a candidate for Freshman of the Year in the league.

During her one year leading the UTRGV women’s tennis program, Wooten-Quijada compiled an overall record of 11-11 and a mark of 3-2 in WAC play. The Vaqueros advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2016, falling to top-seeded California.

Prior to UTRGV, Wooten-Quijada spent a year as one of the tennis professionals at Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, where she was part of one of the highest rated private tennis programs in the country.

Brookhaven Country Club is known for producing high-caliber athletes across several sports, including golf star Jordan Spieth.

Additionally, Wooten-Quijada was the assistant coach at the University of Houston in 2013-14, helping the Cougars to a 21-6 record and an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

She also has a stop at Stephen F. Austin from 2011 to 2013, including one season as the head coach. While in Nacogdoches, Wooten-Quijada led SFA to a combined 33-18 record, a Southland Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Her first coaching experience came as the head coach at Lee College from 2010 to 2011, where she helmed the program to a runner-up finish at the 2011 NJCAA Championships while developing three NJCAA Division I All-Americans that season.

A native of Crandall, Texas, Wooten-Quijada was a four-year letter winner at Purdue where she finished her career with a combined 116 victories. As a senior, she recorded 41 victories while finishing sixth on Purdue’s all-time doubles victories list.
