One of the great traditions has been the designation of a walk-on, or former walk-on player as the “New Mexico Man” each week during the season. Started by former coach Bob Davie and continued by current head coach Danny Gonzales, the selected player leads the team onto the field with the New Mexico state flag before home games as well as in Las Cruces at the Rio Grande Rivalry game between the Lobos and New Mexico State. The player runs with the flag across the field to the north end zone, where he waves it for the home crowd.
The weekly player is selected based on dedication, work ethic, team spirit and unselfishness that exemplifies Lobo football and the state of New Mexico.
