Sam Hinojosa joined the Lobo Family in March of 2026, serving as the Head Football Athletic Trainer.
With the Lobos, Hinojosa oversees all athletic training services for the Lobo football team, in collaboration with the sports medicine care team and the Associate A.D. For Health and Performance, Bob Waller.
Sam came to UNM after spending five seasons with UTSA. He joined the Roadrunner athletic training staff as the assistant athletic trainer with the Football program in the Summer of 2021. He was promoted to senior assistant athletic trainer in the Spring of 2023. He also served as the Men's Tennis athletic trainer from 2021 - 2023. In his time in San Antonio, he was awarded Preceptor of the Year for three seasons by the undergraduate kinesiology program. While there, he oversaw return-to-play progressions, ordered and maintained protective bracing and inventory for the sports medicine department, and served as the liaison to external entities, including Gatorade, DonJoy, and other sports medicine services.
Before his time in San Antonio, Hinojosa served as the Head Athletic Trainer for Bay City High School, a 4A school located in Bay City, Texas. While there, he oversaw the athletic training services for all teams within Bay City ISD, including middle school. While there, he was instrumental in establishing a Food Bank for the athletes.
A native of La Feria, Texas, Hinojosa graduated from Texas State University in 2018 with a Bachelor's in Athletic Training. While in San Marcos, he worked with 7 of the Bobcat varsity teams and volunteered for multiple IronMan races and marathons in the medical tent. He also provided athletic training services for The Spring League, a developmental football league based out of Austin, Texas.
Following his undergraduate studies, he attended the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Master's Degree in Advanced Athletic Training in 2020 while serving as a graduate assistant with the Gamecock Football team and as the Head Athletic Trainer at AC Flora High School. While attending USC, he was awarded GA of the Year in 2020. He also volunteered and served on the Finish Line Sweep Team for the 123rd Boston Marathon in 2019.
Hinojosa holds certifications in Graston Technique M-1 Basic, Personalized Blood Flow Restriction, Level 1 Dry Needling, and Intravenous Fluid Replacement Therapy.
