Lobos to Host UNM Team Open on Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The 2020 indoor track and field season continues at home for The University of New Mexico as the Lobos host the UNM Team Open on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Coming off of a successful opening home weekend in which the Lobos recorded three event wins, six personal bests and five of the top marks and times in the Mountain West this season, UNM will have 50 entries and two relay teams competing in the one-day meet.
One event to look out for is the women’s mile, which will be filled with runners in the Cherry and Silver, among them Weini Kelati, Alondra Negrón, Lydia Hallam, Gracelyn Larkin, Emily Martin, Juanita Johnson, Brenda Rosales-Coria, Johanna Briscoe and Kyla Fugate.
Negrón enters the weekend as the current Mountain West Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after winning the mile last weekend with an altitude converted time of 4:45.91, the current fastest time recorded by a MW runner this season.
Larkin is second in the event in the conference with a time of 4:50.26, and Kelati will be running for the first time since setting the school record, as well as the MW record, in the 5000-meter at 15:14.71. However, this will be her first appearance in the mile this season, another event in which she holds the school record.
Saturday’s meet will have a heavy Pac-12 presence with four teams competing in UCLA, Washington State, Arizona State and California. Other notable schools competing in the meet are TCU, CSUN, Virginia Tech, Air Force and Nevada. The UCLA and TCU men are currently ranked 22nd and 23rd, respectively in the latest USTFCCCA national rankings.
As aforementioned, the Lobos posted five of the top results in the Mountain West this season at the opening weekend meet, with Jay Griffin IV holding a 21.45 altitude converted time in the 200-meter, Kristian Hansen leading in the mile with 4:08.34 (altitude converted), Negrón in the mile, the men’s 4×400 relay at 3:13.41 (altitude converted) and Aidan Quinn in the triple jump (49-9, 15.16m). Overall, UNM has seven total top results with the added time of Kelati’s 5000-meter and Negrón’s 3000-meter time of 9:35.17.
Another highlight in the meet will be the men’s 200-meter dash in which the Lobos have three of the four fastest times in the MW with Griffin, Alejandro Goldston (third, 21.81) and Carlos Salcido (fourth, 21.82). Both Griffin and Goldston will be competing in the event on Saturday, as well as the 60-meter dash, while Salcido will compete in the 400-meter dash.
The meet will be streamed on FloTrack, although access will require a subscription, and live results will be available HERE. The first event, men’s pole vault, is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. MT, while the first track event, the women’s 600-meter, is set for 11:00 a.m. MT.
Fans can attend in person using their Pride Pass or can purchase tickets at the door for $5. UNM students can receive free admission with their student ID.
