Lobos Open Outdoor Season at Three California Meets

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Following a successful indoor season, The University of New Mexico track and field team opens its outdoor season this weekend in California.
However, the Lobos will go their separate ways as UNM student-athletes will be competing in three different meets throughout three days, beginning on Friday.
Ten runners will be at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State University at Chabot College in Hayward, Calif., and will all run on Friday.
The Lobos will have five entries on the women’s side and two on the men’s side in the 5000-meter run. Running at 7:40 p.m. MT will be Catrina Thomas, Johanna Briscoe, Juanita Johnson, Chamique DuBoise, Isabela Nellos, while the men, comprised of Ian Crowe-Wright and Jared Garcia, run at 7:06 p.m. MT.
UNM will have three entries in the 1500-meter with Iolo Hughes running at 5 p.m. MT and Alexandra Harris and Natasha Bernal at 4:54 p.m. MT.

A short distance away, eight Lobos will be competing at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto in five events, on Friday and Saturday.
UNM will have Adva Cohen and Hannah Nuttall in the 1500-meter run which starts at 2:24 p.m. MT, Emily Martin in the 5000-meter run (starting at 8:15 p.m. MT), Ednah Kurgat in the 10,000-meter run (starting at 10:07 p.m. MT) and Jonny Glen in the 3000-meter steeplechase (6:57 p.m. MT). Kristian Hansen, Max Wharton and Michael Wilson will be the only Lobo entries on Saturday, running in the 800-meter set to start at 3:48 p.m. MT.

The majority of the team will be in Southern California at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Team Challenge, competing in 14 events on Saturday. New Mexico will be one of six teams competing, joining Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Bakersfield, Cornell and Grand Canyon.
Mackenzie Everett and Steffi Jones will get UNM started on the track at 1:20 p.m. MT in the 1500-meter and Camillo Dünninger will start his day in the 110-meter hurdles at 1:32 p.m. MT.
Running in the 400-meter will be Ben Parmoon, Isaac Cole, Bryan Cutler and Dünninger on the men’s side and Sarah Smyth, Bailey Brion, Abbi Rael and Nakala Watson. The men will line up at 1:52 p.m. MT and the women will follow at 2:02 p.m. MT.
In the 100-meter dash will be Jay Griffin IV, Alejandro Goldston, Beau Clafton and Akeisha Ayanniyi, with the men scheduled for a 2:12 p.m. MT start and the women a 2:22 p.m. MT start.
At 2:32 p.m. MT, Gavin Sleeter will run the 800-meter and at 2:40 p.m. MT, Larimar Rodriguez, Jones and Everett will take to the track for the women’s 800-meter.
Griffin and Goldston are also entered in the 200-meter, scheduled for 3:15 p.m. MT. The women will have four entries in the 200-meter dash at 3:23 p.m. MT in Smyth, Brion, Rael and Watson doubling up on events for the day.
The Lobos will have one final entry on the track in the 4×400 to close the meet.
In the field events, Tanner Battikha and Ryan Chase will start the Lobos off in the long jump at 11 a.m. MT and Dünninger and Clafton will compete in the pole vault and javelin, respectively, at noon MT.
On the women’s side, Ayanniyi, Cathilee Mullings and Diamond Black will compete in the long jump at 12:15 p.m. MT. Shortly after that, Ada’ora Chigbo will represent UNM in the high jump at 1 p.m. MT and Katherine Whiting and Shannon Fritz are scheduled for the pole vault which starts at 2 p.m. MT
Black and Mullings return to the sand pit, joined by teammate Marthe Roee, for the triple jump at 2:45 p.m. MT with Aidan Quinn scheduled in the men’s triple jump competition at 1:30 p.m. MT.
Brent Dioniso is the lone Lobo for the high jump and Dünninger is the lone Lobo in the discus, with both events scheduled to start at 2:45 p.m. MT.
After competing in the long jump, Chase will continue his day in the shot put at 1:15 p.m. MT and on the women’s side, Allison Mady will compete in the shot put at 3:15 p.m. MT for the last scheduled field event on the day.
The UNM women enter the outdoor season ranked second in the country in the FloTrack rankings as released on Tuesday and 13th in the USTFCCCA Preseason Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index released on March 18. The USTFCCCA ranking was the highest preseason ranking for the UNM women in program history as well as the highest preseason ranking achieved as a program, men’s side included. With a total of 144.95 team points, the Lobos were the highest-ranked Mountain West school in the USTFCCCA standings and earned 48 points in the FloTrack team rankings to trail only USC.
