LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team headed into day three of the ITA Regional Championships today.
In singles play of the main draw, Alex Cozbinov of UNLV defeated Ricky Hernandez-Tong in the quarterfinals 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In the Round of 16 doubles main draw, Hayden Sabatka/ Bart Van Leijsen defeated Cassell King/ Kyle Pease of UNC 8-5. Ricky Hernandez-Tong/ Rodolfo Jauregui defeated Mark Kovacs/ Carlos Longhi Neto of Idaho 8-5. Both pairs advanced to the main draw quarterfinal doubles.
The quarterfinal doubles were played in the afternoon following the Round of 16. Hernandez-Tong/ Jauregui defeated Mauri Benitez/ Stjin Dehaan of NMSU 8-5. However, Sabatka/ Van Leijsen fell to Kyle Butters/ Jack Heslin of Boise State 8-5.
Hernandez-Tong/ Jauregui will play in the semifinals of the main draw doubles against Alex Gasson/ Yannik James of Denver tomorrow at 9 a.m.
In singles play of the consultation draw, Bart Van Leijsen advanced to the third round with two wins in second round and third round qualifier but fell to Lucas Fumagalli of Air Force 4-6, 6-4, 12-10. Jauregui defeated Courtney Lock of UNLV in the third round of the consultation draw and will face Slava Shainyan of Utah tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
In the third round of doubles play of the consultation draw, Sean Baklini/ Jorge Escutia advanced to the quarterfinals due to withdrawal of injury from Aidan Carrazedo/ Sam Tullis of BYU. The pair will play tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of Charlie Croxford/ Richard Solberg of UNLV and Cassell King/ Kyle Pease of UNC at 9 a.m.
“This week has been encouraging to see the men using many of the areas we have tried to improve upon this fall. We are evidently making some progress and we will continue to push to get a little better tomorrow,” said head coach Ben Dunbar.
The Lobos are determined and ready compete again tomorrow. The tournament runs through Sunday.
