LOS ANGELES, CALIF. —The University of New Mexico men’s tennis squad started the ITA Kickoff weekend today against No. 42 ranked Georgia Tech. The Lobos lost 4-0.

“Tough match today against yet another very good team,” said head coach Bart Scott. “There was marked improvement across the board as far as competing the right way with the right focus and energy, we got that part right. Now, we simply need to couple that with better play. We are not far off and once again we have another great opportunity to get better tomorrow against either UCLA or SMU.”

The Lobos played some good tennis, but it wasn’t enough to beat Georgia Tech. In doubles play, No. 8 Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen lost to No. 36 Casey Kay and Michael Kay 6-3. Shortly after, Augustus Ge and Rodolfo Jauregui fell to Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks and Cole Fiegel 6-3.

Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen competed in the number one and two positions in singles play. They both came up short against their opponents, losing 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-3 respectively.

The Lobos did not clinch any singles wins and three matches went unfinished. At this point, Jorge Escutia was up on his opponent 6-4, 4-2 but it was a little too late.

After today’s match, the Lobos are looking forward to tomorrow’s play against the winner of UCLA and SMU.
