Matt Johns joined the Lobo Football program in December of 2023, and he serves as the tight ends coach for UNM.  He comes to New Mexico after a five-year stint at William & Mary.

A former collegiate quarterback at Virginia, Johns brings experience at several different positions to the Lobo coaching staff, as well as having previously served as a passing game coordinator.

The 2024 season will be his 2nd working with Mendenhall.

PREVIOUS COACHING STOPS

WILLIAM & MARY (2019-23)

Johns spent five seasons with the Tribe of William & Mary, serving as quarterbacks coach for his final four seasons and passing game coordinator for the final two seasons there.  He also spent a year as inside receivers and tight ends coach.

In his two seasons as passing game coordinator, William & Mary showcased tremendous success through the air.  In 2022, the Tribe ranked seven in passing efficiency (164.62), fourth in yards per attempt (9.64), and sixth in yards per completion (16.04).  William & Mary scored 33.5 points per game in 2022, good for fifth in program history, and the offense gained 448.8 yards per game, good for fourth in program history.

In 2023 despite William & Mary switched to a more run-based offense, the Tribe finished third nationally in fewest interceptions thrown (4) and ranked 33rd nationally in third-down percentage (42.7%).

With William & Mary, the Tribe advanced to the FCS Quarterfinals in 2022 and won 11 games, tying a program record.

He coaches Darius Wilson, who was named the state’s No. 2 quarterback by VaSID, and who earned CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2021.

His first year with William & Mary was in 2019, serving as inside receivers and tight ends coach and W&M increased its team scoring by nearly 100 points.

VIRGINIA (2018)

Johns spent one season as a graduate assistant with the Cavalier defense after his playing career at Virginia ended.  In his lone season Virginia played in the Belk Bowl, went 8-5 and saw the defense net three All-ACC selections.  It also ranked in the top 20 nationally in interceptions (17, 11th) and passing yards per game (183.0, 16th) while just missing the top 20 in scoring defense (21.0, 21st).

PLAYING CAREER: VIRGINIA (2014-17)

As a player, Johns was a four-year letterwinner for Virginia quarterback, where he played his final season for Bronco Mendenhall.  At UVA, Johns finished his career 11th on the career list for yards (4,233), sixth in touchdown passes (30) and sixth in 200-yard games (6).

Johns graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Virginia in 2016, and an M.A. in Higher Education/Athletic Administration from Virginia in 2017.  Matt is engaged to Brittany Ratcliffe, who plays forward for the Washington Spirit in the NWSL.
