
John Waters joined the University of New Mexico football staff in December 2024 and he serves as the Director of Scouting. In this role, he oversees all aspects of player evaluation, film analysis, and recruiting strategy to help identify and acquire top talent for the Lobos. He also works with the General Manager in putting on recruiting events and roster construction.
Before arriving in Albuquerque, Waters served as a Recruiting Quality Control staffer at the University of Idaho for two seasons from 2023-24, where he managed the recruiting database, evaluated film, coordinated on-campus visits, and assisted in prospect communication. Prior to Idaho, he spent the 2022-23 season at Butler University as a Defensive Quality Control coach. At Butler, Waters was instrumental in breaking down game and practice film, generating scouting reports, and aiding with practice management.
A Phoenix, Arizona native, Waters earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports Business from Arizona State University in 2022, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Before his time at ASU, he played a season of college football at the University of Redlands in 2018.
Waters resides in Albuquerque with his fiancée, Lauren.
