Joe Spaziani joined the Lobo Football program in December of 2023, and he serves as the Director of Football Operations for UNM. He comes to New Mexico after a four-year stint at Virginia where he served in a variety of capacities.
This will be Spaziani’s third year working with Bronco Mendenhall.
With New Mexico, Spaziani handles many of the logistics that aid in keeping a Division I program on task. Spaziani handles all facets of travel for the program as well as working with UNM’s athletic performance staff in directing UNM’s daily meal schedules. He also serves as a liaison between the football program and many of the on-campus constituents at New Mexico.
Prior to UNM, Joe spent four years at Virginia, serving in various positions. He started his career under his collegiate coach Bronco Mendenhall as a regional scout before serving three years as a graduate assistant, spending two seasons with the offensive line and one with quarterbacks.
He spent his final year as an analyst; working on special projects for the football program.
Spaziani spent one year in professional football, playing in 2019 for the Toronto Argonauts as a long-snapper after being drafted by Toronto in the sixth round (47th overall). He played five seasons at Virginia (from 2014-18), playing 30 games as a long snapper after starting his career as a quarterback.
Spaziani earned three degrees from Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s in 2018 in foreign affairs and a master’s in 2019 in higher education. He earned his doctoral degree in 2024 in higher education. Spaziani, a native of Hingham, Massachusetts, comes from a coaching family as his father Frank was a head coach at Boston College and spent 47 years coaching in the FBS and the Canadian Football League.
