Lobos Close Out Day Three at Long Beach, Mt. SAC Relays

by Connor Gilbert

New Mexico Track & Field athletes notched six more performances that ranked among the Top 10 in program history in their respective events — four in the 400m and two more in the 400 hurdles — to close out the final day of competition this weekend for the Lobos in California.

In the elite heats of the men’s 400m at the Mt. SAC Relays, Brodie Young improved on his No. 3 UNM All-Time mark with a new outdoor best (45.63) and Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer (53.18) and Rebecca Grieve (53.23) ran the third- and fourth-fastest women’s 400m times in program history for outdoor bests of their own. Over at Long Beach, Sofia Pineda added another 400m PB (54.46) to move to No. 6 on the women’s outdoor list and Hanna Kiess (58.73) and Levente Soos (51.17) both recorded new 400 hurdles personal bests that moved them up to No. 3 and No. 7 on the women’s and men’s lists, respectively. Two other Lobos — Jacob Cavanaugh (400H) and Kahari Wilbon (400m) notched lifetime bests of their own to round out the day with eight in total.

3. Hanna Kiess – 58.73
• PR, UNM #3 All-Time

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Hanna Kiess PR’d for the second time this week – after taking .21 seconds off her personal best on Thursday, Kiess took .46 seconds off that time on Saturday with a 58.73 clocking to finish third overall.

That time moves her from No. 4 to No. 3 on the UNM all-time outdoor list. Kiess’ new lifetime best makes it five improvements in a row in the 400mH – with three sub-60 second performances in a row – solidifying her NCAA regional qualifying push with an improvement from her 59.50 time that ranked 35th in the nation heading into this week. In the seven times she’s ran the 400 hurdles outdoors since her debut in the event, she’s put down a new personal best six times.

In her collegiate 400 hurdles debut (April 11, 2024) at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Invite last year, Kiess ran a 1:03.25 – she’s taken 4.52 seconds off that mark in the time since.
