Samuel Breaks Mile Record at MLK Jr. Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Track & Field racked up eight more PR’s and yet another school record from Habtom Samuel while playing host to the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday.

Samuel put down a 3:59.12 – the fastest collegiate performance of the day in the mile – that converts to a 3:53.91 with elevation calculations, good for second-fastest in the nation and the fastest ever run by a collegiate athlete at the Albuquerque Convention Center. He finished second only to professional runner Amon Kemboi, who finished .92 seconds ahead of him.

Through three meets, Samuel now holds three indoor records – with all three times ranking among the Top 10 in the nation on the NCAA D-I Indoor Qualifying list.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
In the unseeded women’s 3,000m, Maleah Goldie (10:57.26) and Camille Jackson (11:02.85) both posted new personal bests while finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Maja Gebauer posted UNM’s top mark in the women’s pole vault, finishing eighth ahead of Isabel Thomas – who posted a collegiate best of 3.67 while finishing 12th – and Kiara Quezada-Arzate, who matched that mark but fell to 18th on attempts. Kyle Hatler finished ninth in the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.49m.

Adam Giron finished eighth as UNM’s lone representative in the men’s high jump (1.91m), with Alyssa Magallanez finishing 13th (1.57m) on the women’s side.

In an unseeded 200m section, Jose Cornejo led three Lobo men with a third-place finish (21.78), ahead of Jefferson (11th, 21.99) and Jonah Vaquera (19th, 23.39). On the women’s side, Fowler finished ninth (24.75) to lead seven Lobos.

In his season debut, Tim Harris cracked the top 10 in the 600m with a 1:25.31 personal best, finishing 10th. Victor Akhalu led the way in the 300m, finishing sixth with a 33.76 finish – a new personal best – while Brodie Young (eighth, 34.28) and Levente Soos (10th, 34.87) both finished in the Top 10.

In her UNM debut, Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer finished ninth in the 300m while posting a 38.44 time that would stand as the fastest indoor 300m time in program history – however, the time does not count towards the official all-time list due to the track’s size.

UNM closed the night out with two more Top-10 finishes in the men’s and women’s 800m, with Dylan Burrows (1:52.78) finishing eighth on the men’s side and Gabriella K. Szabo (2:10.66) placing fourth in her first meet for the women.
