Nine Lobos Named to Athlon Preseason All-MW Team

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Nine Lobos were named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-Mountain West Team, leaving UNM just one away from being in the top half of the league in preseason honors doled out.  Overall, UNM had two second team members, four on the third team and two on the fourth team.

Last season UNM was last in the league with just six Athlon picks.  UNM had five defensive players selected, two offensive players selected and two special teamers.

UNM’s two second team picks were safety Jerrick Reed II and punter Aaron Rodriguez.  The Lobos had three defensive players on the third team, defensive lineman Jake Saltonstall, Lobo back Tavian Combs, and perhaps the league’s most underrated player in linebacker Ray Leutele.  Punt returner Luke Wysong was also a third team pick.

The Lobo offense had a pair of fourth team selections in the only returning lineman in Isaak Gutierrez as well as running back Nate Jones, who redshirted the 2021 season.  Donte Martin was placed on the fourth team defense.

Overall, San Diego State led all teams with 15 players on one of the four teams.  UNM’s nine total players is good for ninth in the league, but UNM was just one player away from being tied for sixth.

The Lobos open the 2022 season on Saturday, September 3 against Maine.  Season tickets are on sale now and fans can lock in their seats for all six home games for as little at $78.  Fans can head to www.golobos.com/tickets for more information.
