CLOVIS, Calif.— The University of New Mexico track and field team closed the four-day Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships with two more wins on the track, led by Jay Griffin IV and Michael Wilson.
Both Griffin and Wilson continued the winning streak in the 200-meter and 1500-meter, respectively as they brought the total titles in the meet to five.
Griffin completed the season sweep of the 200-meter after running 21.25 to take the win, adding to his indoor 200-meter dash win earlier this season. It is the second year in-a-row that a Lobo has won the event after Carlos Salcido won last year. It also marks Griffin’s second outdoor conference title after running on the winning 4×100-meter relay team in 2018.
Michael Wilson’s championship winning time of 3:46.80 in the 1500-meter ensured the fourth consecutive year that a UNM runner has won the event following Josh Kerr’s wins in 2018, 2017 and 2016. Peter Callahan won in 2014, making it the fifth time in six years that a Lobo has won the event. Wilson won by 0.53 seconds to earn his first conference outdoor championship.
UNM had one runner-up finish in Ednah Kurgat, who ran the 5000-meter in a time of 15:50.93 to produce the highest finish on the day for the Lobo women.
The Lobos scored an event-high 17 points in the 800-meter finals with Max Wharton (1:49.89) and Kristian Hansen (1:49.99) running second and third, respectively in the event and Gavin Sleeter running 1:50.75 to finish sixth.
Ian Crowe-Wright finished in 3:47.66 in the 1500-meter to place third, adding six more points to the score to go along with Wilson’s win.
Eight points in the men’s total team score came in the 400-meter finals behind Ben Parmoon’s fourth-place finish at 48.38 and Isaac Cole’s sixth-place time of 48.75.
UNM had two more fourth-place results on the men’s side as Aidan Quinn finished fourth in the triple jump with a 48-0.0 (14.63m) mark on his fourth attempt to score five points. The relay team of Beau Clafton, Alejandro Goldston, Lawrence Johnson and Griffin placed fourth in the 4×100-meter relay, running 41.46 to contribute five points.
The Lobos added four final points in the javelin as Clafton finished sixth for three points after throwing 203-5 (62.00m) on his third attempt, and after competing in the decathlon earlier in the meet, Camillo Dünninger placed eighth at 184-8 (56.28m), which the sophomore achieved on his first throw.
On the women’s side, Cathilee Mullings finished third in the triple jump after moving in to third on her fifth-round jump of 40-3.50 (12.28m). She was one of two jumpers that registered that as their best mark, but Mullings had a better second mark to earn the higher placement and the six team points.
Adva Cohen ran 4:22.88 to finish third in the 1500-meter to score six points. It was an improvement of her previous time by 0.13 seconds.
Ada’ora Chigbo tied for fifth in the high jump with a height of 5-7.25 (1.71m), clearing the height on her second attempt after clearing the first bar of 5-5.25 (1.66m) on her first attempt. Her result added 3.5 points to the team total.
Steffi Jones placed sixth in the 800-meter final for three team points, crossing in 2:10.11.
At the conclusion of the meet, the men finished in fourth with 92 points and the women ninth with 47.5 points.
Up next for the Lobos that have recorded qualifying marks and times is the NCAA West Preliminaries, set to take place May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
