SAN JOSE, Mexico — A big second round for seniors Emma Edwards and Darian Zachek helped the University of New Mexico women’s golf team to chop 14 strokes off of its first-round score at the Battle at the Beach hosted by Baylor on Saturday. The squad improved one spot on the leaderboard as they wrapped up round two in 13th place.

After posting a first-round total of seven over, 78 on Friday, Edwards improved her score by seven strokes in round two as she shot an even par 71, a tournament-low score for the team. Her four birdies in the round helped her to jump up 19 spots on the leaderboard to land in a tie for 37th after round two.
Zachek also showed outstanding improvement in the round as she took nine strokes off of her first-round total of 83 (+12) and posted a second-round score of just three over for a round-two score of 74.
Coming in five strokes behind Edwards in the round and sitting in second for New Mexico on the tournament is sophomore Caroline Jansson who shot a round-two total of nine over, 81 to put her in a tie for 59th. Junior Reva Morris trails by just two strokes as she improved her first-round total by six strokes, posting a four over, 75 on the day to land her in a tie for 66th. Freshman Kamie Hamada also improved in the second round as she posted a 79 (+8), shaving one stoke off of her first-round total.
As a team, New Mexico shot a 299 (+15) in the round for a combined two-round total a 612 (+44). So far in the tournament, the Lobos have registered 102 pars and 15 birdies over the first two days of action. The squad is sitting in 13th place and trails 12th-place Baylor by just five strokes.
Sitting in first after round two is Auburn which holds a score of three under, 565 and is ahead of second-place Vanderbilt by ten strokes. Texas and Clemson are tied for third with a total of 581 (+13) while Texas is leading in pars (119) and Vanderbilt is leading in birdies (34).
