ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team opens its home schedule this Friday, Oct. 26 when the Lobos compete against the NAU Lumberjacks in Seidler Natatorium, located in the Johnson Gymnasium.

The dual meet will begin with the one-meter dive at 3 p.m. MT with the swim portion starting at 4 p.m.

Friday’s meet marks the second meet of the season for the Lobos’ swim team after opening the season at the Pacific Invitational on Oct. 12 and 13. UNM finished third amongst the six teams competing, led by four first-place finishes and 18 top-three finishes, including two event wins by freshman Hedda Øristland in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.   Matea Sumajstorcic (1650-yard freestyle) and Klara Farkas (500-yard freestyle) tallied the remaining wins on the weekend for the Cherry and Silver as the team finished with 726 points.

This, however, will be the season debut of the five-member dive team, two of which are freshmen.  NAU will also be competing for the first time this season as it opens up its 2018-19 season in Albuquerque.

The competition will be familiar for the Lobos, as UNM competed at NAU last year with the Lobos falling to the Lumberjacks with a final score of 167.5-132.5 in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Lobos finished with eight wins and 19 top-three finishes with now-senior Adriana Palomino producing four wins in the loss.

Palomino won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.43), the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.46) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.12) while also winning the 400-yard freestyle relay along with returning teammate Konoha Shinada (1:45.67).

Shinada was the only other Lobo to win multiple events on the day, as she won the 50-yard free (23.49) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.44). Along with her win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Shinada help the 200-yard medley relay team place second (1:45.67). Amongst her 200-yard medley relay team were returner Carol De Groote Tavares, who also topped the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.17) and took second in the 100-yard backstroke (57.52).

The Lobo diving team was led by now-junior Natasha Dark, who finished fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 266.78, while also placing second in the three-meter dive with a 284.78. Allyson Concepcion also placed in the top-three of the three-meter dive, finishing third with a 278.48.

On Friday, a total of 18 Lobos will competing in 14 swimming events, and five Lobos will be competing between the two diving events.
