Lobos Sit in Fifth After Day One of the MW Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving finished the first day of the Mountain West Championships on Wednesday, holding fifth place out of 10 teams. The Lobos’ 128 points puts them 61 points back of co-leaders San Diego State and Nevada, who both have 189 points.

The first final was for the 200-yard medley relay. 10 teams competed in the event, one from each of the competing schools, with UNM’s squad including senior Madison Burns, juniors Carol De Groote Tavares and Konoha Shinada and sophomore Asami Terada. The Lobos placed eighth in the event, posting a final time of 1:41.05. Boise State took first the event, finishing with a final time of 1:38.23.

The relay was followed by the one-meter dive. Preliminaries took place earlier in the day with two Lobos qualifying for the B-Final including sophomore Natasha Dark and junior Allyson Concepcion. Dark and Concepcion qualified 14th and 15th out of 37 divers scoring 235.92 and 234.21 respectively. Dark finished 10th overall, second in the B-Final, with a final score of 261.51, while Concepcion finished 16th with a final score of 237.93. 

Freshman Hannah Tiendas also scored in the event, finishing 21st with a final score of 219.60. Junior Madeline Horner and sophomore Valencia McDonald followed, with Horner posting a 210.75 for 26th place and McDonald posting a 190.38 for 32nd place. Nevada’s Sharae Zheng took away the victory with a final score of 352.41.

The Lobos finished the first day strong with a record-setting fourth place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. New Mexico’s group included juniors Adriana Palomino and Emily Huffer and freshmen Matea Sumajstorcic and Klara Farkas. The four posted a final time of 7:12.43, which broke the UNM school record of 7:20.70 set by Palomino, Huffer, Morgan Ginnis and Anna Lengyel in 2016.

The Mountain West Championships will continue on Thursday with five events including the 200-yard freestyle relay, the three-meter dive, the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle. Fans are able to stream the event live on FloSwimming online or on the site’s app on iOS, Roku and Apple TV 4.
