BOISE, Idaho – The University of New Mexico Men’s Tennis team fell 4-2 to San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise.
The No. 4 seed Lobos started off doubles play with a strong lead over the No. 5 seed Aztecs. Bart Van Leijsen and Dominic West posted a 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Milen Ianakiev and Santiago Cevallos of San Diego State. Rodolfo Jauregui and Sean Baklini racked in the second doubles win at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2 victory over the Aztec’s Marko Goles-Babic and David Hough.
This gave the Lobos the 1-0 doubles point advantage over San Diego State.
New Mexico struggled to retain momentum in singles. Lawrence Perrin was defeated 1-6, 2-6 by Joel Popov at No. 5 and Van Leijsen fell 3-6, 4-6 to Goles-Babic at No. 1, giving the Aztecs a 2-1 lead.
West brought the Lobos back up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over San Diego State’s Sander Anderson, tying both teams 2-2, but it wasn’t enough.
Jorge Escutia dropped 2-6, 2-6 at the No. 6 spot to Rafael Gonzalez and Jauregui was defeated 4-6, 4-6 at No. 4 by Cevallos, giving the Aztec’s the final 4-2 victory and entrance to the MW Championship semifinals.
Lobos close out the 2017 season with a 12-13 overall record and 4-3 in MW Conference matches, improving from 2-4 in the 2016 season.
