Palomino Sets School Record After First Day in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming team sits in fifth place out of 10 teams after the first day of the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston, Texas. The team competed in five events on the day, including the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay.

The 500-yard freestyle saw junior Adriana Palomino in familiar territory at the top of the leaderboard, winning the event with a time of 4:42.77 after qualifying third with a 4:49.94. Her 4:42.77 qualifying broke the school record for the 500-yard freestyle, breaking her own record of 4:44.15 that she set earlier this year. The Lobos also saw two great performances from their freshman, with Matea Sumajstorcic finishing ninth and Klara Farkas finishing 17th. Sumajstorcic qualified ninth with a 4:53.29 and posted a final time of 4:47.12, while Farkas qualified 23rd with a time of 4:59.67 and finished with a 4:54.69.

Three Lobos qualified for the 50-yard freestyle finals, including junior Konoha Shinada, senior Madison Burns and sophomore Breanna Wiercinski. Wiercinski finished 18th with a time of 23.55, while Burns captured a top-ten finish, finishing sixth with a time of 23.32. Shinada won the event, continuing her excellent season with a time of 22.75.

The Lobos were led by senior Madison Burns, Shinada and Carol de Groote Tavares, Wiercinski and junior Carol de Groote Tavares in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The four swimmers finished fourth in the event overall with a total time of 1:32.10.

The Lobos put on another strong relay performance with a top-10 finish in the 400-yard medley relay. De Groote Tavares, Shinada and Burns, along with junior Raevin Teran-Richardson, posted a sixth place finish with a final time of 3:47.11.

Only one UNM swimmer qualified in the 200-yard individual medley. De Groote Tavares posted a time of 2:06.41 in preliminaries, qualifying 27th. She finished the finals in 31st with a 2:06.93.

UNM will be back in action tomorrow at the Phil Hansel Invitational, while the diving team will compete at the NAU Diving Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz. To follow the Phill Hansel Invitational live, download the Meet Mobile App here
