LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team defeated Boise State 4-0 in the 2017 ITA Kick-Off consolation match on Sunday, posting their first victory of the season. The team now stands 1-4.
In doubles, the duo of Bart Van Leijsen and Dominic West defeated Kyle Butters and Harvey Shackleton of BSU 6-3 at the No. 2 postion. However, Jack Heslin and Brian Tran of BSU defeated Rodolfo Jauregui and Ricky Hernandez-Tong 6-4 at the No. 1 positon, leaving both teams tied 1-1. Sean Baklini and Jorge Escutia closed out doubles play by defeating Pedro Platzeck and Greg Wischer of BSU 6-3 at the No. 3 position. This gave the Lobos the win in doubles.
In singles, Van Leijsen defeated Butters 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 Position. Baklini didn’t trail too far behind Van Leijsen and defeated Shackleton 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 Position. To conclude the match, West defeated Platzeck 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 position, giving him his first win of the season, first win with the team, and the final point that would give the Lobos their first win of the season. Hernandez-Tong, Jauregui and Escutia had matches that were left unfinished but were very close in scores.
“Proud of the guys today, Boise State fought hard,” head coach Ben Dunbar said. “The guys are starting to see that if they commit to playing the right way, good things will happen. Back to Albuquerque tonight and then we will once again start preparing for another California trip in a couple weeks. Go Lobos!”
The Lobos will return to California in two weeks for another double-header against Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on February 11-12.
