ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —  The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is kicking off their fall season as hosts of the annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational starting on Sept. 11.

In preparation for the team’s first tournament there were six qualifying rounds to determine who would be fielding for the Lobos. Leading off for UNM are seniors, Ingrid Gutierrez and Alexandra Moisand who both were consistent in their rounds at this tournament last year with an average of par-73 and par-74.

“I think that we’ve had enough competitive rounds under our belt to have a shot at taking the title,” said head coach Jill Trujillo.

Rising junior, Darian Zachek had the best finish for the Lobos last year with a final score of 1-under-215 [74-73-68]. Zachek posted a 4-under 68 on the final day and she carded two birdies on her final three holes. Overall, she earned twelve birdies, tying her for the fifth most in the field.

The field is being shared with previous tournament winners Oklahoma State who clinched the title with a 20-under 844 as well as No. 1 Stanford and No. 8 Northwestern.

“We’ve got some steep competition and as long as we can be right there with them, within 10 to 15 shots, I think that’ll be a huge success for us,” mentioned Trujillo.

The Lobos are fielding five players as well as two individuals the red-shirt freshman, Zoey Akagi-Bustin and Swedish-freshman Caroline Jansson. With this being their only home tournament, the Lobos are looking to start their fall season with a strong showing in front of a hometown crowd.

The tournament will start on Monday, Sept. 11 with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start at the UNM Championship Golf Course.
