Reno, Nev. — It was a great conference match on Sunday for the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team!
The Lobos (8-10, 1-1 MW) defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack (6-7, 1-1 MW) 4-1 at the McArthur Tennis Center.
The power doubles team of Bart Van Leijsen and Dominic West quickly defeated Robert Margitfalvi and Peter O’Donovan of Nevada 6-2 at No. 2. However, Rodolfo Jauregui and Sean Baklini fell to Mile Cilic and Kostya Nesterenko soon after 6-3 at No. 3. It came down to Ricky Hernandez-Tong and Lawrence Perrin against Julien Evrard and Augustin Delahodde at No. 1.
Hernandez-Tong and Perrin defeated Cilic and Nesterenko 7-5 that gave the Lobos the doubles point advantage.
In singles, West swept Cilic 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 that put the Lobos 2-0. Van Leijsen soon followed posting a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Evrard at No. 1. Perrin was defeated by Nesterenko 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 that put the Wolf Pack’s first point on the board 3-1. Hernandez-Tong clinched the match by defeating Margitfalvi 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, giving the Lobos the 4-1 victory over the Wolf Pack.
“It’s always nice to rebound from a tough loss with a good win,” head coach Ben Dunbar said. “The top of our lineup played like studs today! We have plenty of work to do this week and will start preparing diligently for next weekend in Boise and Utah. It’s an exciting conference season and no match is easy. We were pumped to win today and build some momentum.”
