GIRDWOOD, Alaska — Vegard Busengal did what he does, picking up his third straight podium finish and his seventh top-10 in seven races, and Katharine Irwin and Karoline Søvik Myklebust finishing in the top-10 on the women’s side as New Mexico sits in fourth place after the first two events of the Seawolf Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska.
 
Tomorrow all eight RMISA alpine squads will once against compete in the giant slalom, this time for the UAA Invitational.  In order to cut costs when Alaska Anchorage hosts a meet, they host two meets to save on travel costs for the schools.
 
Busengdal was just 0.07 out of first place in an extremely tight race as Montana State’s Addison Dvoracek and Morten Unger Bakke finished first and second as Montana State won the men’s giant slalom and sits in first place overall with 170 points.  Busengdal picked up 34 points for UNM, and the Lobos got a huge lift from rookie Isak Klein, who earned 17 points with a career-best 18th place finish.  Patrick Brachner’s 25th place finish earned 13 points as UNM scored 64 points to finish one point out of third place in the event.
 
Tyler Theiss was 27th and Nick Veth was 29thAlex Barounos didn’t finish his second run and Rob Greig didn’t finish his first run.
 
On the women’s side, Irwin used a strong second run to leap into the top-10, coming in eighth place and earning 23 points, with Myklebust just 0.01 seconds behind her in ninth, earning 22 points.  Sydney Staples just missed the top-20, coming in 21st but picking up 14 points to give UNM 59 points, good for fifth place.  Alexandra Sjöström was 23rd and Taylor Grauer was 29th.
 
The Nordic portions of both the Seawolf and UAA Invitationals will take place the week of February 7.
 
NOTES:  Busengdal now has 148 points for the season and his career, and he is just 24 behind Rob Greig for the active lead on the team … Klein’s previous best finish was 22nd, and his 18 points were the first of his career … Irwin and Myklebust both have a pair of top-10s this season … Irwin’s eighth place finish tied for the season-best among the women’s alpine squad, equaling her own finish at the Utah GS and Myklebust’s at the MSU GS.
