TUCSON, Ariz. — Day two in the desert is over, and the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished in fifth place overall at this year’s Arizona Intercollegiate after posting the team’s lowest tournament team round Tuesday.
UNM shot the third-lowest team round on the day, a 2-over 286 and eventually finished the tournament at 30-over 882 (293-303-286).
Assistant Coach Chris Massoletti had high praises on behalf of Andre Garcia, the low-Lobo this week.
“Garcia was phenomenal all week and really stepped up huge today,” Massoletti said. “He birdied three of his last six to put an exclamation point on his round today. We’re very proud of his patience and poise this week. He was tremendous.”
Garcia (71-73-66-210), carded the tournament’s second-lowest round on Tuesday. His bogey-free, five-under 66 included consecutive birdies on his final two holes. The day’s performance propelled him into a tied for second place with Washington’s Carl Yuan.
Sophomore Sean Carlon (72-72-76-220) added another top-20 finish to his collegiate resume. At day’s end, Carlon stood at 7-over overall and in sole possession of 19th.
Samuel Kim (73-79-73-225) righted the ship today by posting a 2-over 73, helping him to secure a tie for 34th at 12-over with the duo of Charles Neel White and Joacim Ahlund from Louisiana Tech. Kim closed out the day’s effort by playing his final three holes in 2-under fashion.
Gustavo Morantes (77-79-74-230) carded his lowest round of the tournament today avoiding any big numbers taking advantage of the improved weather conditions on the day. Morantes eventually found himself in a seven-way tie for 53rd position at 17-over.
Rounding out the list of Lobo competitors this week at the Arizona Intercollegiate was Andrej Bevins (83-79-73-235) who also posted his lowest score on the week, shaving six strokes off his second round which extended into this morning due to suspension of play yesterday evening. Bevins was able to jump up nine spots on the leaderboard and landed in a two-way tie for 70th with Ryan Gaske of Gonzaga at 22-over.
As a team New Mexico tied for the third-lowest par-3 scoring average in the field (3.20), had the fifth-most birdies in the field (39) and tied for the second-most eagles.
Individually Andre Garcia tallied the lowest par-3 scoring average (2.67) and the third-lowest par-4 scoring average (4.00). Garcia also had the fourth-most pars (36) and birdies (11). Outside of Garcia, Sean Carlon had the third-lowest par-5 scoring average in the field (4.78).
“The boys played solid all day but had a tough stretch in the middle of the final round making a few unforced errors but battled back with a great closing 4 holes, playing them 5-under as a team.” concluded Massoletti.
Next up for the Lobos is the John Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawaii Feb. 15-17.
